John Benson was a blessed man, a man rich beyond material wealth. He was married to the love of his life, his best friend Sharon for 51 years. He had 3 children, Russell, Holly and Terry, grandfather of three girls he adored, Rebecca, Althea and Tessa. He began his Teaching Career at Garfield in 1965 where he remained for 39 years. During his teaching career, Mr. Benson sponsored the class of summer of 68 and 72. He was creator and sponsor for the Los Angeles City Almost Anything Goes. He was one of Garfield’s most popular teachers, inspiring students to study or be slimed in one of his games. He was a Teacher, Dean Softball, Basketball, Tennis and Volleyball coach at Garfield and coached for several park leagues. He was named teacher of the year, lead the softball team to Eastern League Championships numerous of times and City Championships. He also lead the Volleyball team to City Championships back to back. He was a Teacher, Dean and Coach, loved by many. Upon Mr. Benson’s retirement, he along with several alumni founded the John Benson Scholarship Foundation. He was head of the foundation, our Chairman of the Board, extremely active and determined to raise funds for graduates right until his recent passing. He supported Garfield in many ways but his ultimate goal was to raise funds for Garfield High School athlete graduates. He succeeded in raising over $350,000.00 during his time with JBSF helping over 500 Garfield graduates. He was a great mentor to many of his recipients. Mr. John Benson was a faithful believer in God and was an incredible optimist with passion, compassion and love for anyone he met. Garfield students referred to Mr. Benson with love and cariño as “Vato Loco”. His family was gracious and shared this amazing man with the community of East Los Angeles, Garfield High School and the John Benson Scholarship Foundation.

Our Priceless Bulldog will be with us forever in our hearts, prayers and countless memories we have of his laughter and positive outlook.

Watch out Heaven, our Vato Loco has wings!
